The local anesthetic effect is exerted by Prilocaine Hydrochloride, an amide-type compound that reversibly blocks nerve conduction. It acts by depressing the propagation of action potentials in nerve fibers, since it blocks Na⁺ entry through the membrane in response to nerve depolarization by blocking sodium channels. It prevents both the generation and conduction of action potentials by interfering with the increase in Na⁺ permeability.
